Local Anti-corruption Initiatives
December 1, 2000, Smolyan. A youth radio debate "Society Is Responsible for the Spread of Corruption" was organized by the Youth Legion "Stefan Stambolov" - a partner organization of Coalition 2000 within the Small Grants Program. The main idea of this project was to provoke social counteraction of the spread of corruption at a local level. Students from two high schools in Smolyan - "Ivan Vazov" and "St. St. Cyril and Metodious" High School, participated in the debate. Mr. Petkan Illiev, University of National and World Economy, and an expert of Coalition 2000, and Mr. Deyan Ashkov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Youth Legion "Stefan Stambolov" took part in it as well. The debate was aired live on Radio Rodopa - Smolyan.

December 2, 2000, Balchik. Association "Citizen", a partner of Coalition 2000, organized a round-table discussion within the project "Civic Society against Corruption". Representatives of the local media, cultural institutions, non-governmental organizations, the local administration and private business attended this event. Mr. Michail Nedelchev, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Association "Citizen", addressed the participants with a speech entitled "The NGOs - Corruption Debate Organizers." Current local corruption cases were also debated. Association "Citizen" took the engagement to become an informal mediator between the people of Balchik and the public institutions about any corruption allegations locally and in the region.
December 15, 2000, Nedelino, Smolyan district. A Public Council for Combating Corruption at Nedelino Municipality was established with the participation of the Public District Council for Counteracting Corruption - Smolyan. This initiative is a part of the anticorrupion project of the Bulgarian Youth Legion "Stefan Stambolov", a partner of Coalition 2000.
Its main goal is to provoke civic control and social counteraction of the spread of corruption on local level. Mr. Deyan Ashkov, Chairman of Bulgarian Youth Legion “Stefan Stambolov”. Citizens and public officials, business people and labor union leaders attended the meeting as well.
December 18, 2000, Veliko Turnovo. The Local Daily Agenda 21 Association organized the final discussion within the project "Corruptive Practices and Mechanisms Predominant among Professional Groups Prone to Corruption Pressure" which is a part of the Small Grants Program of Coalition 2000. The main task was to discuss the results of the surveys of public officials from the administration of Veliko Turnovo Municipality, the Customs Bureau in Gorna Oriahovitsa, the Prosecutor’s Office and the Court in Veliko Turnovo carried out in the period October 15-30, 2000. Among the participants in this event who discussed the results of the survey we should note Todor Velikov, Member of Parliament, Dr. Rumen Rashev, Mayor of Veliko Turnovo, Mr. Krasimir Genchev, Director of the Regional Tax Directorate, Mr. Liubomir Liubenov, Director of the Customs Bureau, Mr. Radko Ionchev, Director of the District Investigation Service, Mr. Boris Minovski, Prosecutor of Appeal, Ms. Antoaneta Chakarova, District Prosecutor.
