Irina Georgieva BOKOVA


Born on July 12, 1952 in Sofia. Divorced, has two children.

Graduated in International Relations from Moscow's State University for International Relations 1976. Senior-attache and third secretary in the department "The UN and Disarmament" at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 1977-82. Third secretary in the standing delegation of the Republic of Bulgaria in the UN, New York 1982-83. Second and later first secretary in the department "The UN and Disarmament" and in the Minister's of Foreign Affairs Office 1982-91. Worked for a number of private firms 1992-95.

Member of BSP until Feb. 1997. MP (elected in General Toshevo single-member electoral district) in the 7th Grand National Assembly (Parliamentary Group of BSP ). Secretary of the Government Committee on European Integration since 1995. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aug. 1995 - Feb. 1997 in charge of the relations with international organizations and the European integration. First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aug. 1996 - Feb. 1997. Nominee for vice president of Bulgaria from the coalition "Together for Bulgaria" Sept. 1996. Acting for Minister of Foreign Affairs Nov. 1996 - Feb. 1997. Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs since Feb. 1997.
