Born on Jan. 8, 1924 in Sofia. Widowed, has one son.

Completed high school in Sofia 1942. Graduated in Law from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" 1948. Repressed for political reasons, served sentences in the camps of Bosna, Bogdanov dol, Belene. Interned. Construction worker 1951-70. Administrative officer in the Institute of History in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences 1970-74. Freelance translator 1974-90.

Member of the Club for Glasnost and Democracy 1989-90. Member of the Union of Translators in Bulgaria. Member of the Democratic Party since 1990. Member of the Secretariat of the Democratic Party 1990. Chair of the Democratic Party since Dec. 1990 (reelected Dec. 1996). Member of the National Coordination Council of UDF 1990-94. Co-chair of the People's Union-BANU coalition. MP (elected in "Sredets" Sofia single-member electoral district) in the 7th Grand National Assembly (Parliamentary UDF). Chair of the Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party (within the Parliamentary UDF) in the 7th Grand National Assembly. Co-chair of the Parliamentary Group of UDF in the 7th Grand National Assembly 1991. Deputy chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy in the 7th Grand National Assembly. MP (elected in Sofia) in the 36th National Assembly (Parliamentary Group of SDS). Chair (Speaker) of the 36th National Assembly 1991-92. Chair of the Parliamentary Group of UDF in the 36th National Assembly 1992-94. MP (elected in Sofia) in the 37th National Assembly (Parliamentary Group of the People's Union-BANU, Democratic Party). Co-chair of the Parliamentary Group of the People's Union. Member of the standing delegation of the Bulgarian Parliament in the Assembly of the European Union.
